“I hope to be a firm advocate for often-overlooked policy tools that help create a level-playing field in trade and promote innovation, safety and ethics to support sustainability.”
Scholar background
Shuyi is a multicultural professional with over four years of experience in international development and cooperation, having worked with leading international organizations across Europe and China.
She began her global career as an Operations Assistant at the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in Geneva, where she supported the organization of Telecom World 2019. She later joined UNESCO in Paris through a highly competitive traineeship program, working in the Executive Office of the Education Sector. There, she contributed to program cycle management, strategic planning and monitoring efforts.
Most recently, Shuyi served as an Adviser in the Industry and Trade Cluster at GIZ China. In this role, she implemented a project commissioned by the German Federal Ministry, collaborating closely with private sector partners and Chinese government agencies. Her work focused on strengthening quality infrastructure, organizing high-level bilateral political dialogues and technical exchanges, and conducting policy research on China’s industry and trade landscape to support strategic decision-making.
Shuyi holds a master’s degree in Public Policy from The Chinese University of Hong Kong and a bachelor’s degree in Management from Taiyuan University of Technology in China.
Personal statement
“Great things happen when the world agrees.” This belief has resonated with me throughout my work in international organisations, where I have had the privilege of contributing to initiatives that rely on both multilateral and bilateral consensus and cooperation. As global uncertainties abound and reach unprecedented levels, I find myself questioning what this means for the future of global sustainable development and how we might manage it through systematic and structured approaches.
Pursuing a Master’s in International Affairs at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy at NUS, supported by the Hinrich Foundation Global Trade Scholarship, is a step toward finding that response.
I aim to develop the understanding and tools needed to navigate the complex issues shaping global affairs and trade policies, both from within and beyond the classroom. Particularly, I am interested in addressing fragmented technical regulations and promoting digitalization in international trade processes, as I believe interoperability and internationally harmonised norms are prerequisites for unleashing the economic potential of industrial development and reducing barriers to market access.
I see being part of the Hinrich Foundation community as an opportunity not only to deepen my understanding of trade affairs and engage with action-driven peers working at the forefront of global trade, but also to further cultivate my desire to make an impact - and above all, to help foster a vision that surpasses even what is yet imaginable, to guide my actions in a zeitgeist characterised by uncertainty.
